As a Psychologist…I truly believe in the practice of mindfulness.
As a Mama, I have been challenged to not just teach but to practice what it means to be mindful.
“Mindfulness is a state of mind…it means paying attention in a particular way, on purpose, in the present moment, non-judgmentally”.
I’m sure most Mamas can relate to the experience of having a ‘FULL MIND’ rather than the experience of feeling ‘MNDFUL’. As a Mama there are always so many thoughts, questions, things to remember ‘what time is the next nap, what should we have for dinner, when was the last poop, ok I have one hour of baby free time…what should I get done’…..and the lists go on and on…..no wonder our minds feel so full.
Sometimes, I get to the end of a day and reflect, thinking to myself, what was it about today that made things feel rushed and chaotic…..and I find myself noticing…it was the thoughts moving through and around my mind, rather than actually what experiences, challenges, and triumphs the day contained.
For me, this poem is a perfect reminder of the importance of slowing down, taking time to see, feel, hear and connect with the wonderful experiences that Mamahood can bring.
Yes its tough, yes it takes thought and effort, but wow is it worth it. Its worth it for the relationship I have with my babies and for my own mental health and well being.
More on Mindfulness to come…..
Slow down mummy, there is no need to rush,
Slow down mummy, what is all the fuss?
Slow down mummy, make yourself a tea.
Slow down mummy, come spend time with me.
Slow down mummy, let’s pull boots on for a walk,
Letts kick piles of leaves, and smile and laugh and talk.
Slow down mummy, you look ever so tired,
Come sit and snuggle under the duvet,
And rest with me for a while.
Slow down mummy, those dirty dishes can wait,
Slow down mummy, let’s have some fun – bake a cake.
Slow down mummy, I know you work a lot,
But sometimes mummy, it’s nice when you just stop.
Sit with us a minute,
And listen to our day,
Spend a cherished moment,
Because our childhood wont stay!
